The Greenbelt
Paulo's Peak
Paulo's Peak, a 200-foot "mountain" offering a 360 degree panorama of Staten Island, was formed when boulders and serpentine rock were removed to construct a highway that was designed during Robert Moses's tenure in the 1960s. The highway, which was never built thanks to opposition from concerned citizens, would have virtually destroyed the Greenbelt. Formerly locally known as "Moses Mountain," it was formally renamed for former Staten Island Borough Parks Commissioner Thomas A. Paulo in 2021.
