Balafon Quartet – Tradition Reimagined
Monday, May 19, 2025
5:00 p.m.–7:00 p.m.
The Balafon Quartet: Tradition Reimagined is an acoustic ensemble featuring four balafons- – traditional wooden xylophones with deep roots in West African Mande culture. Dating back to the 12th century, the balafon is more than just a musical instrument; it serves as a symbol of history, storytelling, and spirituality, traditionally played in ceremonies and celebrations.
The project offers a fresh, contemporary interpretation of this ancient tradition. The ensemble features Griot Abou Sylla, Irene Koloseus, Andy Algire, Niko Diarra-Koloseus. Together, they bring the vibrancy and beauty of Mande music to audiences of all backgrounds in an engaging and immersive way. This event is supported through the Washington Square Park Conservancy 2025 Arts Grants.
