Sustainable Garden Watering: The Art of Using Ollas

Thursday, April 24, 2025

6:00 p.m.7:30 p.m.

Learn about using an olla, an unglazed terracotta pot that slowly hydrates your plants. This technique helps save water, especially during New York's drought. In this workshop, you'll discover the history of ollas and why they are effective for modern gardens. We’ll guide you on choosing the right olla for your plants, how to install it, and where to place it for the best results. You will also learn how often to refill it, maintenance tips, and how to check your plants’ hydration needs. By the end of the workshop, you will know how to use ollas to reduce water waste and promote healthier plants.

NYC Parks GreenThumb hosts this event. We are proud to be the nation’s most extensive urban community gardening program, sustaining over 550 gardens throughout New York City. With GreenThumb’s support, community gardens are centers of environmental justice, ensuring that our city is fairer, safer, and greener for all. GreenThumb’s events are free and open to the public.
