Renovated playground within Shore Road Park is latest in series of investments to revitalize greenspaces throughout Bay Ridge

Today, NYC Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue joined New York City Councilmember Justin Brannan and members of the community to celebrate a $3.4 million renovation of Vinland Playground in Bay Ridge. The project, the latest in a series of investments transforming Shore Road Park, equipped the playground with new landscaping and trees, painted games, seating, and play equipment for children of all ages.

"Bay Ridge residents deserve safe, accessible, and beautiful greenspaces – and that’s what we’re delivering, project after project,” said NYC Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue. “With this $3.4 million renovation, we’ve enhanced this playground with engaging and interactive play features, plus new landscaping, seating, and trees that New Yorkers of all ages can enjoy. Between this project and the many investments we’re making throughout Shore Road Park and Bay Ridge with the support of Councilmember Justin Brannan, we’re ensuring that South Brooklynites can enjoy all the mental and physical health benefits of time spent outdoors.”

“Growing up, Vinland Playground was like my backyard. Our parks are a top tier public resource and necessity, which is why I’ve been proud to invest over $90M into parks in my district since joining the council,” said New York City Councilmember Justin Brannan. “I’m especially proud that my childhood playground, now new and improved, is reopened for use by local kids like me far into the future.”

The improved playground now features new play equipment for children of all ages and abilities, including a toddler playhouse, two new swing sets, and colorful painted games. Parks also installed a brand-new interactive spray shower to keep kids cool in the hot summer months, as well as a new safety surface throughout the playground. The renovation also enhanced the playground with new trees, seating, fencing, landscaping, and drinking fountains, creating a more relaxing and inviting environment for Brooklynites of all ages to enjoy.

The renovation of Vinland Playground is one of many investments Parks has made in Shore Road Park and throughout Bay Ridge with the support of Councilmember Brannan. Last year, Parks opened the new Frank Decolvenaere Dog Run in the south end of Shore Road Park, a $1 million project that pays tribute to a longtime Bay Ridge community member who was killed while walking his dog in 2020. Parks also recently reconstructed a portion of the western Shore Road Park pathway, reconnecting path sections that had been disconnected for decades. Also in Bay Ridge, Parks reopened the John J. Carty Playground earlier this year following a $5.4 million renovation that added new play equipment, including an innovative sensory play feature designed in consultation with an occupational therapist.
