WHEELIE GOOD NEWS: NYC PARKS CELEBRATES COMPLETION OF A SECTION OF THE SHORE ROAD BICYCLE PATH

The newly repaved bicycle path in Southern Brooklyn was completed four months ahead of schedule

NYC Parks is celebrating the early completion of a $575,000 transformation of the Shore Road bicycle path in Brooklyn. The approximately 2100 ft span of fresh pavement was finished four months ahead of schedule and was funded by City Council Member Justin Brannan.

“We are excited that we were able to get this portion of the Shore Parkway bicycle path repaved and open for use. said NYC Parks’ Brooklyn Borough Commissioner Martin Maher. “This is part of a larger renovation project funded by Council Members Brannan and Treyger that will benefit pedestrians and cyclists for years to come.

“Thanks to the hard work of our New York City Parks Department, I am pleased to say that this portion of the bike path no longer resembles the surface of the moon,” said City Council Member Justin Brannan. “By getting this done ahead of schedule, cyclists are able to enjoy a smooth ride this summer instead of having to wait until next year.”

The project reconstructed a portion of the existing asphalt bicycle path that had fallen into disrepair between Bay 8th and Bay 14th Street. The repaved path offers cyclists a smooth ride through the scenic area as the route runs over the bridge above the Belt Parkway, under the Verrazano Bridge, and up to the American Veterans Memorial Pier.

In addition to these improvements, a larger project to reconstruct the bicycle path and seawall reconstruction along Shore Parkway is currently in design. We anticipate the design phase to be complete in fall 2021. The project is funded by the Mayor’s office, the Brooklyn Borough President’s office, and City Council Members Mark Treyger and Justin Brannan in the amount of $7.5 million.
