On May 12, Commissioner Adrian Benepe joined City Council Member Kendall Stewart, Representative to the Borough President Ann Marie Adamson, Community Board 17 Chair Lloyd Mills, Community Board 17 District Manager Sherif Fraser, Captain Schiff of the 67th Police Precinct, and third graders from P.S. 269 to break ground on improvements to Nostrand Playground in Flatbush, Brooklyn. The playground is located on Nostrand Avenue and Foster Avenue.

“The revitalization of Nostrand Playground is another example of how we are expanding recreational opportunities and making our local parks and playgrounds better and greener,” said Commissioner Benepe. “Thanks to nearly $2 million in funds from Council Member Stewart and Mayor Bloomberg, the improvements will feature a playground and spray shower with a garden theme, a tot theater area, game tables and accessible planting beds. It will be a neighborhood oasis for children and adults alike.”

This $1,935,000 project was funded with allocations of $1,818,000 from Council Member Stewart and $117,000 from Mayor Bloomberg. The playground is being completely redesigned and rebuilt with a garden theme. It will include a spray shower with floral elements, new play equipment, safety surface, swings, a tot theater area for imaginative play, decorative pavements, and raised planting beds with Braille labels. A new path will lead through the planted area and connect to the adjacent school, P.S. 269. An adult seating area will also be constructed and will include game tables, benches, and raised planting beds for easy access.

Additionally, as part of PlaNYC’s ‘asphalt to turf’ initiative, Parks announced the upcoming conversion of the park’s asphalt ballfield into a multi-purpose synthetic turf field with more than $1.5 million in Mayoral funds.

The improvements to Nostrand Playground were designed by Stacia Tull. The resident engineer is Pilar Alban and the contractor is UA Construction Corp. Work is expected to be complete this winter.
