In 2021, the reconstruction and renovation of the Mapes Park ballfield was completed through the Community Parks Initiative—the City's first-ever parks equity initiative. The $12.5 million project, funded by Mayor Bill de Blasio, was among one of more than 800 capital projects that were intended to build a more equitable park system. As a Community Parks Initiative project, community members came together to ensure the protection and preservation of this majestic American elm on the corner of 180th Street and Mapes Ave.
