Recreation Centers Host Heart Of The Community

Last week, NYC Parks celebrated Valentine’s Day with “Heart of the Community,” an event featuring free fitness classes and wellness seminars at 11 Recreation Centers throughout the city.

Hansborough Recreation Center, at 35 West 134th Street in Manhattan, celebrated the day with a pilates class designed to create a balanced body while invigorating the mind; a nutrition seminar, blood pressure checks, and “Walk it Out” fitness program conducted by Harlem Hospital; a “Wellness Q&A” where participants were encouraged to ask questions on a variety of topics including losing weight, what to choose when eating out, and good fats vs. bad fats.

Some examples of the heart-healthy activities offered at other Centers include:

Nutrition Seminar: Discuss heart-healthy eating and, of course, sugar! (Hamilton Fish Recreation Center, Manhattan)

Lunchtime Sweat: Get a break from the office. Enjoy a one-hour workout, building muscle and burning fat while working out the stress from the day. (Greenbelt Recreation Center, Staten Island)

Swim Aerobics: Doing aerobics in the pool combines a good work out with minimal stress on muscles and joints. (St. Mary’s Recreation Center, the Bronx)

Yoga: While yoga is primarily about stretching, it develops strength and increases flexibility. Each pose has a specific purpose. (Al Oerter Recreation Center, Queens)

All Heart of the Community events were free, open to the public, and no membership was required to join.

NYC Parks manages 35 recreation centers that have various amenities including; indoor pools, weight rooms, gymnasiums, indoor tracks, dance studios, art studios, game rooms and computer classrooms. NYC Parks Recreation Center membership gives you access to New York City’s most affordable and extensive network of recreational facilities across the five boroughs.

QUOTATION OF THE DAY

“Perhaps the feelings that we experience when we are in love represent a normal state. Being in love shows a person who he should be.”
