This playground is named for Howard Bennett (1911-1981) who was a Harlem community leader and the founder of the National Citizens Committee for a Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday. He was also a leader of the 369th Veterans Association, the organization of members of the famous “Harlem Hellfighters", and served as Labor Chairman of the New York Branch of the NAACP.
