Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe today joined Queens Borough President Helen Marshall, State Senator Frank Padavan, State Assembly Member Grace Meng, Joe and Gavin Maloof (owners of The Palms in Las Vegas and the Sacramento Kings), CEO of California Skateparks Joe Ciaglia and pro skateboarders to cut the ribbon on a new skate park in Flushing Meadows Corona Park.

The new skate park sits on the footprint of the Astral Fountain, which was originally constructed for the 1964 World’s Fair. This project is a creative form of adaptive reuse and adds a new destination within Flushing Meadows Corona Park.

“We at Parks are thrilled to have this unbelievable facility. The Maloof Money Cup at Flushing Meadows Corona Park this June is a first for New York City and our Adopt-a-Park program,” said Parks & Recreation Commissioner Adrian Benepe. “Flushing Meadows Corona Park currently offers tennis, soccer, swimming, ice skating, cricket, baseball and more. On top of that, it's already the home of world-class sports facilities like the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, and Citi Field. Making world-class skateboarding part of it all is tremendous.”

The Maloof Brothers generously funded the $1.15-million Flushing Meadows Corona Skate Park through the “Adopt-a-Park” program, where small businesses, community groups, and civic–minded individuals provide financial support for the refurbishment and maintenance of New York City's greenspaces. In addition, the Maloofs will provide $225,000 for maintenance of the skate park over three years. The skate park features elements from some of the most popular skateboarding sites around the city including Union Square Park, Brooklyn Banks and Chrystie Park.

The Parks Department is home to 13 skate parks throughout the five boroughs with two more in construction. Skateboarding is extremely popular in the city and it is estimated that there are more than one million skateboarders in NYC alone.

“New York was first on our list of expansion markets because it’s the headquarters for skateboarding on the East Coast and is home to some of the most iconic skate spots in the world,” said Joe Maloof. “With the Brooklyn Banks set to close for four years, the timing was perfect for us to bring the Maloof Money Cup to New York City. The skateboarding community is really phenomenal in how open and inclusive they are of everyone. We’ve always wanted to build a park that we can leave intact for everyone in the community to enjoy, and thanks to the NYC Parks & Recreation Department and support from Vans, we were able to make it happen.”

The skate park will make its debut, on June 5th and 6th, with the first-ever Maloof Money Cup in NYC, a two-day skateboarding competition where top pro skateboarders from around the country will compete in the Volcom Street Pro for $250,000 in prizes. Paul Rodriguez, Chris Cole, Torey Pudwill, Mike Carroll and more will show off their skills at the new skate park.
