Capital project to reconstruct the synthetic turf field and running track at popular West Brighton park finished ahead of schedule
NYC Parks Staten Island Borough Commissioner Lynda Ricciardone joined Council Member Kamillah Hanks on September 12 to celebrate improvements at Corporal Thompson Park.
Parks recently completed a capital project to improve the synthetic turf field and track at the park. The field’s shock pad, synthetic turf, and infill were all replaced to provide an upgraded playing surface. The track’s subbase was ground and leveled, and the resilient surface material was replaced to provide a new running surface.
“This park is an essential centerpiece for recreation for the surrounding community. By completely revamping the track and synthetic turf field, we’re ensuring that Staten Islanders have access to high-quality park amenities,” said NYC Parks Staten Island Borough Commissioner Lynda Ricciardone. “Our goal is to keep our recreational spaces beautiful and updated so people are encouraged to stay active and get outside. We’re grateful to the City Council for funding this project and to our Parks team for completing it ahead of schedule.”
“I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the incredible community members who tirelessly advocated for the transformation of Corporal Thompson Park. Your dedication and passion have made this project a reality, and together, we’ve created a better space for our Staten Island community to enjoy,” said Council Member Kamillah Hanks.
The $3.17 million project was funded by the New York City Council. Construction began in July and was completed several months ahead of schedule.
Built in 1996, the track at Corporal Thompson Park is the only public outdoor track in Staten Island and is equipped for all field sports including the discus throw, shot put, javelin, high jump, pole vault, and hurdles. The synthetic turf field is used for both soccer and football.
In 2010, renovations were completed at the park to add a new drainage system and benches, as well as a water fountain and spray mister.
