Staten Island's first park was laid out back in 1836, and remains a destination for Port Richmond residents to this day. Veterans Park is a town square with nearly two dozen trees that give shade to areas for seating and interlocking park paths. In one corner lies the Putnam Memorial, a large historic drinking fountain dedicated in 1915. On the Park Street side of Veterans Park, a stone monument with a plaque commemorates Sullivan’s Attack of August 22, 1777, when American Revolutionary War officer and political leader John Sullivan led an unsuccessful night attack on Staten Island.
