NYC Parks Staten Island Borough Commissioner Lynda Ricciardone, yesterday joined New York State Assembly Member Michael Cusick and Staten Island Borough President James Oddo to break ground on the reconstruction of the cross-country running trail at Clove Lakes Park. The $1.9 million project is funded by Mayor Bill de Blasio and Borough President Oddo.
“The reconstruction of the running trail at Clove Lakes Park will provide Staten Islanders with an improved space to enjoy the natural elements, and exercise both their bodies and minds,” said Commissioner Ricciardone. “This park is an important resource for this community, and I know that its members will take advantage of this revamped amenity.”
“We want Staten Islanders to have top of the line amenities, and that is what they will get with the reconstruction of these trails,” said Borough President Oddo. “The running community in this borough is active, engaged, and an integral part of Staten Island. When this work is completed I hope to see Islanders of all ages taking advantage of this remarkable corner of Staten Island.”
“This was a great day for Staten Island hikers and runners with yesterday’s groundbreaking of the 5k trail in Clove Lakes Park,” said Assembly Member Cusick. “The renovated path will be a place for park goers and runners alike to enjoy the scenery of Clove Lakes and encourage people to get out and exercise. As a runner, I look forward to utilizing the trail once the project is complete.”
"Staten Island is host to many 5k races throughout the year to benefit various charities and causes. This new trail will offer a beautiful, scenic training ground for both athletes and nature lovers alike,” said New York State Assembly Member Nicole Malliotakis. “I can't wait to use it!"
For nearly a century, Clove Lakes Park has been a destination for Staten Islanders seeking active and passive recreation. Yesterday, we begin the process of enhancing its use for cross-country runners,” said New York City Council Member Debi Rose. “I know that many of my constituents who come here for a run through the beautiful landscape here look forward to the completion of this new amenity.”
This project will restore the existing Clove Lakes running trail to make it safer, more environmentally–friendly and improve its appearance. The trail will be re-graded and receive new trail and sub-base materials, mile markers and a new start/finish line. Additionally, the project will construct new edging, improved drainage systems to control erosion and landscape enhancements.
The reconstruction is expected to be complete by March 2020.
