Dead trees reported on streets, parks, playgrounds or other public spaces will be inspected and, if appropriate, removed. As part of NYC Parks new Tree Risk Management program—Work is prioritized to address the highest risk conditions first. To report a dead tree, call 311 or use our tree service request system.

Parks makes every effort to preserve and protect trees in the public right-of-way until their health or condition warrants removal. Parks does not remove healthy trees due to infrastructure conflicts with sewer lines or sidewalk concrete.

All stumps remaining from tree removal operations performed by Parks are recorded and registered. Stump removals are dependent on the availability of funding. We currently have a backlog of stumps awaiting removal. If you are a property owner who would like a City-owned stump removed, we have two options for you to consider:

  1. You can view our Neighborhood Tree Planting cycle maps to see when your neighborhood will be serviced next. During our comprehensive Neighborhood Tree Planting Program, NYC Parks will conduct tree removal, stump removal, and planting everywhere possible and closing all unplantable tree beds prioritizing the most heat-vulnerable neighborhoods first. 
  2. You can request a Tree Work Permit from Parks and hire a contractor to remove the stump at your own expense.

Before you make a tree service request, please make sure that you have not previously submitted the same request. If you need to check the status of your request, please visit 311 Online.

The City does not perform work on trees located on private property. You should consult with a certified arborist before performing any work on your property.

Not all tree stumps in New York City are represented in this map below. If a stump is not displayed on this map, it is not scheduled to be removed during the next fiscal year.
