NYC PARKS CELEBRATES OVER $3 MILLION IN RENOVATIONS TO SUNSET PLAYGROUND IN SUNSET PARK

NYC Parks Brooklyn Borough Commissioner Martin Maher today joined City Council Member Carlos Menchaca and local community members to cut the ribbon on the newly completed Sunset Playground in Sunset Park, Brooklyn.

“We understand the importance of this treasured space in the Sunset Park community, and we are thrilled to be able to reopen it to them today,” said Commissioner Maher. “The new Sunset Playground will be a haven for neighborhood children of all ages, and we could not have completed it without the support of our local council member Carlos Menchaca and the patience of this passionate and dedicated community.”

“Sunset Park families and kids are thrilled with their new Children’s Playground. I thank Parks for responding to community calls for faster construction after unexpected delays,” said Council Member Menchaca. “Local park advocates and I will keep working with Parks to make sure all upcoming Sunset Park improvements are delivered on time. Work will start this fall on extensive restoration of paths, benches and fences. The recreation center is set for major work, and we’ll soon see other park additions like adult fitness equipment. Sunset Park is finally getting the investments and attention it deserves. This Brooklyn jewel is ready to serve our neighborhood for generations to come.”

“Reopening our revamped Sunset Park playground is a cause for community celebration,” said Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams. “My administration has been proud to be part of $1 million in capital funds to upgrade this park, and the revitalization of its playground will have a particularly meaningful impact on our mission to raise healthy children and families.”

Funded with $3.22 million by Council Member Menchaca and Mayor Bill de Blasio, the new and improved Sunset Playground blends more seamlessly into the surrounding park. The new playground expands on the footprint of the much smaller, former site, and serves children of all ages. There are playhouse units for toddlers, adventure play equipment for younger kids, rope climbers for older kids, and swings for all ages.

The playground includes new slides, climbers, a sandbox area, and a fun interactive spray shower, all easily accessible to children of all abilities by connective ramps and platforms. New drinking fountains, fencing, and security lighting have been installed, as well as landscaping and trees to provide shade on hot summer days.

Sunset Park is one of New York’s hidden treasures. Tucked away in the Brooklyn neighborhood that bares its name, this park is famous for its breathtaking vista. Sunset Park offers, at sunset, and at all times, stunning views of the rugged skyline of Manhattan. From the park’s highest point, you can see the Statue of Liberty, vibrant Brooklyn neighborhoods, and the green hills of Staten Island and New Jersey.
