Parks Celebrates $4.4 Million Renovation To Sunset Park Field

Brooklyn Parks Commissioner Kevin Jeffrey joined Council Member Sara González and students from P.S. 169 to celebrate Earth Day and cut the ribbon on a newly renovated synthetic turf field and refurbished public bathroom in Sunset Park.

The new, multi-purpose synthetic turf field can be used year round for softball, youth baseball, soccer, and various other activities. Recreation lights have been installed, which increase the available hours for use. The project also includes new dugouts, fencing, a walking track, drinking fountains and landscaping. The comfort station has also been refurbished and made accessible. The adjacent path and plaza were repaved and landscaped, and outfitted with new benches.

“Sunset Park is a year-round destination for athletes and park lovers alike,” said Commissioner Jeffrey. “The new turf field offers a play area for a variety of sports, and the new field lighting means more play time. We are thankful for Council Member González’s continued support of this popular community park.”

The project was funded by an allocation of $3.2 million from Council Member González and $1.2 million from Mayor Bloomberg. In 2007 Council Member González also funded the installation of new pathways, landscaping and new entrances to the park. The Council Member has allocated an additional $3.6 million for the renovation of the spray shower and playground near the pool which is expected to begin in fall 2013, and for the first phase of the redesign and construction of the playground which is expected to begin in spring 2014.

Sunset Park, famous for its breathtaking vista, is one of New York’s hidden treasures. In the summer months, the Park and its Olympic sized outdoor pool become home to swimmers and sun worshipers. And with an active recreation center and playground, Sunset Park has visitors even in the colder months of the year.

Earth Day is celebrated nationally on Monday, April 22 but, at New York City’s parks, every day is Earth Day. Over the next few weeks there will be many opportunities for New Yorkers to get involved by engaging in sustainable programs, sprucing up their neighborhood parks and beautifying their communities.
