NYC PARKS AND DOT CUT RIBBON ON BRAND NEW RICHMOND TERRACE PARK IN MARINERS HARBOR

NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver, FAICP, yesterday joined DOT Staten Island Deputy Borough Commissioner Victoria Giordano, New York City Council Member Debi Rose, New York State Assembly Member Charles Fall, and Northfield Community Local Development Corporation Executive Director Joan Catalano to officially cut the ribbon on Richmond Terrace Park.

“The new Richmond Terrace Park is another great amenity for the Borough of Parks,” said Commissioner Silver. “Thanks to a generous contribution from Mayor de Blasio and Council Member Rose, Mariners Harbor now has waterfront access and a beautiful open space to come relax, enjoy unique shoreline views, and connect with nature.”

“We want our waterfront to be active, revitalized, open, and accessible to the public, which is why I am grateful to see today’s ribbon cutting on Richmond Terrace Park,” said Staten Island Borough President James Oddo. “I look forward to the day Staten Islanders will finally have another way to enjoy and take advantage of their waterfront.”

“Richmond Terrace Park restores a long-lost connection between Staten Islanders and our beautiful waterfront. Generations ago, this was a special place for North Shore residents to spend the day and enjoy a picnic,” said Council Member Debi Rose. “Today, we reopen this section of waterfront for current and future generations to enjoy views of the Kill Van Kull, the passing ships and local wildlife. It is one of many new waterfront parks to open in recent years, and it won’t be the last. I thank Commissioner Silver and all the stakeholders who helped bring us to this long-awaited day.”

As the former Chief of Staff for Parks on Staten Island, this is one of several commitments I continued to advocate for on the North Shore. I look forward to working with all department heads involved with this project to bring more green and open space to Assembly District 61.”

The project constructed Staten Island’s newest waterfront park which links the neighborhood to the water with a pedestrian friendly streetscape, a woodland path, a gathering terrace and an overlook to take in harbor views. Historical maps of Staten Island’s North Shore that offer a rare glimpse into the evolution of the waterway were installed throughout the park. The $4 million project was funded by Mayor Bill de Blasio, with $750,000 coming from Council Member Rose.

With history dating back to the late 1800s and views of large shipping docks, this undeveloped waterfront site was transferred to Parks in 2010. In 2016, the design for the project won an NYC Public Design Commission award. Designed with community input, the new Richmond Terrace Park will enhance the existing shoreline ecosystem and provide the community with gathering and environmental education spaces.

The project was a collaboration between NYC Parks, the Mayor's Office of Environmental Remediation (OER), the Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) Plaza program, the Northfield Local Economic Development Corporation (Northfield LDC), and Council Member Rose.
