NYC Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue joined funder representative John P. L. Kelly and Council Member Alexa Aviles to cut the ribbon today on a suite of improvements to the Red Hook Recreation Center gym including a new maple-wood floor, furnished with a new scoreboard, wall padding, rubber flooring, paint, and decals. New lockers will arrive by this summer. This project was funded with a $115,000 donation made through the Adopt-a-Park program.
"From basketball and volleyball to holiday celebrations, the Red Hook Recreation Center gym is beloved by local athletes and also acts as a gathering space for the community,” said NYC Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue. “We are so grateful for the generous donation to give this gymnasium a much-needed makeover so it can continue to serve the residents of Red Hook."
"There is no joy like a positive before and after transformation - especially in a place dedicated to recreation. How we play informs how we live. Thank you to the Parks Department and the Red Hook community for their enduring spirit and, specifically, for such a spectacular reinvention." said John P. L. Kelly.
The Red Hook Recreation Center gym hosts regular programming including basketball, soccer, pickleball, track and field training, and volleyball, as well as family-friendly annual celebrations like Holiday Toy Giveaway, Halloween Bash, and more.
