St. Mary's Playground

Huntington St. to Luquer St. between Smith St. & Dennett Place

Brooklyn

Underneath the MTA's Culver Viaduct, an under-subway playground serves the communities of Carroll Gardens, Gowanus and Red Hook. This shaded oasis is named for the nearby St. Mary Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church, and it has served as a municipal playground since the late 1960s. Today, it serves as a playground and athletic area. South of Nelson Avenue, a children's playground remains in the shade even on hot days, thanks to the subway overhead, while the north playground lot includes elements for older children and young adults, including basketball courts and a skate park.
