Formerly a vacant lot, Prospect Plaza is part of a larger community development project
NYC Parks Brooklyn Borough Commissioner Martin Maher today joined City Council Member Alicka Ampry-Samuel, New York State Assembly Member Latrice Walker, members of Community Board 16 and community members to cut the ribbon on the brand new Prospect Plaza in Brownsville. Developer Duvernay + Brooks oversaw the construction of the site as part of a larger community development project.
“We are always excited about expanding and opening new parkland,” said Commissioner Maher. “This new park is a great addition to this neighborhood, and we thank the developer Duvernay + Brooks, our sister agencies HPD and NYCHA, the elected officials, our partners and the community for making this a reality.”
The new park features basketball courts, play equipment, a spray shower, a lawn, game tables, and seating areas. The $2.4 million project, was recently transferred from New York City
Department of Housing Preservation and Development to NYC Parks’ jurisdiction.
The opening of Prospect Plaza marks the completion of a multi-phase development of a former New York City Housing Authority housing project. The nearly decade-long redevelopment included the demolition of four housing project towers, construction of low-rise, mixed use buildings that offer affordable housing, a community center, and a new park.
