Commissioner Benepe today joined State Senator Ruth Hassell-Thompson, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr., Council Member Joel Rivera, Council Member Annabel Palma, President of the Bronx Chamber Commerce Lenny Caro, Chairman of the Bronx Chamber of Commerce Joseph Kelleher, and American Golf’s Regional Director of Catering Matthew Silver to cut the ribbon on $10.8 million in renovations to the Pelham and Split Rock Golf Courses in Pelham Bay Park.
“Since the facility opened in 1901 as one of the nation’s earliest municipal courses, Pelham Bay and Split Rock Golf Courses have attracted golf enthusiasts from New York City and beyond,” said Commissioner Benepe. “We are grateful to American Golf for investing $10.8 million in the facility to enhance the visitor’s experience. With improved links, a new catering facility, pro shop, and an updated club house with stunning refurbished Art Deco murals, the historic Pelham and Split Rock Golf Courses are equipped to accommodate a new generation of golfers.”
Funded by American Golf Corporation, which operates the golf facility through a contract with the City, the $10.8 million project included major restorations to the club house including the veranda, the addition of a state of the art kitchen and food prep area allowing for seasonal catering, an addition to the restaurant and bar, a new pro shop, and the refurbishment of the Great Room with unique Art Deco murals. On the golf courses, new drainage and cart paths were installed, the tee boxes and greens were improved, and the sand traps were restored.
“The modernization of these historic buildings, including the banquet pavilion, creates a historic setting with exceptional amenities that enhance the impact and quality of any event, from a large wedding party to a smaller, more intimate gathering,” said Matt Silver, Regional Director of Catering for American Golf Corporation. “Add to that the beauty of the settings on these gorgeous courses, and it’s an above-par experience.”
The Pelham and Split Rock Golf Facility is one of 13 public golf facilities citywide and is New York City's only 36-hole facility. The Pell Golf Course first opened in 1901 as one of the earliest municipal golf courses in the nation. The course is a links style layout and with its expansive fairways and forgiving layout, it is the perfect location for the beginning and experienced golfer alike. In 1936, Parks Commissioner Robert Moses created the adjacent Split Rock Golf Course, establishing New York City’s only 36 hole facility. The Split Rock Golf Course is a championship caliber John Van Kleek classic design.
At 2,766 acres, Pelham Bay Park is New York City's largest park. In addition to the newly-renovated golf facility, visitors to the park can enjoy miles of bridle paths and hiking trails, Orchard Beach, the Bartow-Pell Mansion, and a breathtaking 13-mile saltwater shoreline that hugs Long Island Sound. Pelham Bay Park is a popular place for New Yorkers of all ages to visit. In addition to numerous sports fields, courts, and playgrounds, Pelham Bay Park boasts a wide range of plant and animal life and features prime locations to view one of nature's most skillful hunters, the osprey.
