Littleleaf lindenSouth of Bronx Victory Memorial

There were once 588 maple and linden trees in the Norway Maple and Littleleaf Linden Grove at the Bronx Victory Memorial. While only a couple of littleleaf lindens remain, the grove still serves as a memorial to all those who have fought in a war.

Post oakNorthern edge of Hunter Island

This grove of post oaks dates back to the 1760s. During an expedition to find the oldest trees in New York, a group set out to Pelham Bay Park's forested peninsula in the Long Island Sound in 2004 to take a borehole sample of one of these post oaks, dating it back to 1773. These trees have stood for nearly 300 years, from the era of America's Revolution to New York City's rise as one of the world's most prominent urban centers. Positioned on a rocky and windy peninsula helped protect these trees from development due to the unfavorable conditions for farming and development. Luckily, post oaks are tolerant of sandy soil, salt spray, and wind!
