MAY IS BIKE MONTH

Bike Month is the perfect time for Parks to celebrate its 150 miles of completed greenways. Greenways are shared-use paths that connect our parks, bring New Yorkers to the waterfront with beautiful and safe opportunities to bicycle, jog, and rollerblade. Parks works with other agencies to design and implement the City’s 350 miles of planned off-street paths. During the month of May, Parks, the Departments of City Planning and Transportation (DOT) and Transportation Alternatives (TA) have arranged a number of fun biking events throughout the city. Check out TA’s website at www.transalt.org for information on citywide events. For the new and improved NYC Cycling Map, call 212-CALL-DOT or visit www.nyc.gov/calldot. Watch out for "Wheels & Heels," a newsletter from the Planning Division for an update on the greenways and more bike month events.

THIRTEEN YEARS AGO IN THE PLANT

SAVE TREES, RECYCLE PAPER

Over 28 tons of Parks paper that would have otherwise gone to waste have been recycled sine the spring of 1987, through the City’s Office Paper Recycling Program run by the Department of Sanitation (DOS).

"We have a waste disposal emergency looming on the horizon," said Tony Solomita, the DOS Citywide Coordinator for the Recycling Program. "We’re running out of places to put garbage. Sanitation hopes to recycle 40% of waste to ease the burden on our landfills. Also, Mayor Koch has just made recycling certain items a law. If you don’t recycle, you’re breaking the law."

QUOTATION FOR THE DAY
