Parks & Recreation Breaks Ground On $1 Million In Renovations At Manida Park In Hunt’s Point

Parks & Recreation Commissioner Adrian Benepe was today joined by State Senator Ruben Diaz Sr., Assembly Member Ruben Diaz, Jr., Bronx Borough Commissioner Hector Aponte, Parks Chair Community Board #2 Lytza Colon, Executive Director of The Point Kelly Terry, and 5^th graders from the St. Ignatius Elementary School to break ground on $1 million in reconstruction on Manida Park and the Julio Carballo Ball Fields.

"The $1 million renovation of Manida Park and the Julio Carballo Ball Fields will offer enhanced recreation and fitness amenities for the Hunt’s Point community," said Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe. "With reconstructed fields, new landscaping, state-of-the-art play equipment, a spray shower and a picnic area, the new facility will provide a fun and safe haven for both the young and young-at-heart. Along with the soon-to-open Barretto Point Park and Hunts Point Riverside Park, Manida Park is part of a renaissance of the parks of the Hunt’s Point community."

The existing fields, located adjacent to the Hunt’s Point Recreation Center, will be completely reconstructed. Parks will replace the existing backstops, regrade the fields, construct new clay infields, and plant new grass outfields. The new facility will boast one little league field, one tee-ball field, and one multi-use field. In addition, Parks will enhance the area surrounding the fields with new amenities such as steel bleachers, picnic tables, benches, drinking fountains, a basketball court, play equipment, and a spray shower. New landscaping and fencing will complement the renovations.

In almost five years, Parks & Recreation has spent more than $113 million for Bronx park improvements, including new waterfront parks, greenways, and athletic facilities. In the next five years, Parks will invest an additional $462 million to develop park projects in the Bronx, including more than $200 million from the construction of the Croton Water Filtration Plant. Current capital projects include the creation of a new park at the old Concrete Plant, the expansion of waterfront access at Regatta Park, and the development of the Bronx River Greenway which will connect the South Bronx and Westchester borders with a 15-mile bike and pedestrian path. In addition, new ball fields and athletic facilities are transforming the borough.
