Parks Renames Vleigh Place Playground In Memory Of Judge Moses Weinstein

Today, Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe, Deputy Queens Borough President Karen Koslowitz, former State Comptroller Alan Hevesi, State Assembly Member Nettie Mayersohn, former State Senator Emanuel Gold, Council Member David Weprin, former Council Member Morton Povman, Queens County Clerk Gloria D’Amico, Kew Gardens Hills Civic Association President Patricia Dolan, Community Board 8 District Manager Marie Adams-Ovide and members of the Weinstein family celebrated the renaming of Vleigh Playground in honor of the late Judge Moses Weinstein.

“Recognizing important neighborhood residents is one way to honor public servants and celebrate local role models,” said Commissioner Benepe. “Judge Weinstein’s civic leadership from serving in the battle field as a soldier to working in public office demonstrates the impact one person in a community can make. We are pleased to rename this park in his memory.”

Judge Weinstein lived in the Kew Gardens Hills neighborhood and a few blocks from Vleigh Place Playground for most of his life. He was involved in many youth programs at the park, in addition to being an active public servant.

The judge was a Jewish War Veteran, serving with the U.S. Army in the European Theatre in World War II and he was a member of the Kew Gardens Hills Civic Association. He later went on to become a State Assembly Member before being elected as a State Supreme Court judge. The playground is being renamed in his memory at the request of community members.

Vleigh Place Playground is 3.5 acres and was acquired by the city in 1948, after community members petitioned to have the site turned into a park. Judge Weinstein was among the Kew Gardens Hills residents that signed the request.
