The Parks Department recommends that beachgoers exercise caution at all city beaches due to the approaching Tropical Storm Danny.

“As weather conditions are changing quickly, it is essential that New Yorkers be extremely cautious at our beaches,” said Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe. “As always, beachgoers must obey the instructions of lifeguards, Police and other Parks and security personnel.”

“Fortunately, it looks like New York City won’t see the worst of Danny, but that does not mean we should let our guard down,” said OEM Commissioner Joseph Bruno. “I encourage all New Yorkers to stay informed and take extra care this weekend, particularly along the coast and at our beaches.”

According to the National Weather Service, Tropical Storm Danny is expected to become a level 1 Hurricane starting Friday night. While there is still some forecast uncertainty, the storm appears to be moving eastward over the Atlantic.

We remind beachgoers to swim only between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. and only in areas protected by lifeguards. Swimmers must never enter the water when lifeguards are not on duty.

Impacts from Danny may include heavy surf, rip currents, coastal erosion, and minor coastal flooding. The coastal impact may result in temporary restrictions, including requirements that swimmers remain in shallow waters, and closures at city beaches during this weekend

The public is advised to call 311 or visit our website at www.nyc.gov/parks for information before heading to the beach.
