Hart Island Tour (North Island)

Hart Island is the largest public cemetery in the country and has served New York City since 1869. While Hart Island is currently only used for city burials, the island is deeply connected to New York City institutions. It has served many uses since the 19th Century, including a military training ground, a quarantine station, a psychiatric hospital, a reform school, a rehabilitation facility, a missile base, and a jail
Participants are chosen by lottery.
Lottery registration opens on Wednesday January 22, 2025 and ends Thursday January 19, 2025 at 11:59 p.m.
Please Note:
-You must register each member of your party for the lottery under the same account. Anyone who was not registered will not be permitted to attend.
- If you are selected for the program, you will receive a series of emails confirming your selection and must respond as soon as possible to avoid forfeiting your spot.
- Hart Island is only accessible via ferry. Selected participants will be provided details regarding program arrival and other specifics.
- There are no indoor facilities, restrooms or drinking fountains on Hart Island. There are portable restrooms on the island.
- This tour covers historical context of Hart Island and is about two hours of walking, some parts on uneven terrain. Please dress appropriately for the weather and the terrain.
- Program may be cancelled due to inclement weather at the discretion of ferry operations.
