Today, NYC Parks First Deputy Commissioner Iris Rodriguez-Rosa joined Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson, Council Member Althea Stevens, Nike’s North America Director, Government & Public Affairs Jeannette Rodriguez, and members of the community to cut the ribbon on the newly renovated turf soccer field in T. Wendell Foster Park.
“Thanks to our wonderful partners at Nike, T. Wendell Foster Park has a brand new soccer turf field, and we could not be more grateful,” said Deputy Commissioner Rodriguez-Rosa. “Partnerships like this show how powerful public-private efforts can be, and this new field will facilitate fun and fitness for countless Bronxites into the future.”
"I am beyond excited for the newly renovated soccer field in Rev. T Wendell Foster Park. Thank you to Nike and our NYC Parks department for their continued dedication to providing unique spaces for our community members and young people to enjoy. We look forward to partnering with Nike for future projects around the district, as our collaborative efforts will support the advancement of our community spaces. " - Council Member Althea Stevens, District 16.
The turf soccer field in T. Wendell Foster Park has been renovated through a partnership between Nike and NYC Parks. Around 18,000 square feet of turf has been updated, and the field was repainted to include a modified soccer field. Nike’s partnership with NYC Parks began in 2019 ahead of the Women’s World Cup. In honor of the 23 women representing Team USA, Nike committed to refurbishing 23 sports spaces in NYC.
In 2021, as part of the second phase of NYC Parks’ initiative to expand the representation of African Americans honored in parks, this park was named for Reverend Wendell Foster (1924-2019), civil rights advocate and the first Black elected city official in the Bronx.
