Parks Celebrates Improvements To Mullaly Park

Commissioner Adrian Benepe today joined Council Member Helen Diane Foster and kids from Mullaly Recreation Center SCAN Summer Camp and the Willie Randolph Sports Experience to cut the ribbon on Mullaly Park North and break ground on Mullaly Park South, representing over $6 million in reconstruction.

“The renovation of Mullaly Park demonstrates the City is delivering on its promises to renovate old parks and create new facilities within the vicinity of Yankee Stadium, providing the community with greater access to enhanced outdoor recreational opportunities,” said Commissioner Benepe. “Over $6 million has been invested directly into renovating Mullaly Park, and today we are proud to cut the ribbon on a new multi-purpose field and break ground on a new playground, basketball courts, landscaping, and a spray shower.”

In Mullaly Park North, Parks celebrated the completion of a new synthetic turf multi-purpose field and garden area with an irrigation system, blooming trees, and landscaping. Parks also broke ground on renovations to Mullaly Park South, which will include new play equipment, basketball courts, a shade seating area, and a tree-lined plaza with a children’s spray shower area. The play area will also feature a musical experimentation area with dance chimes, slapped pipes, and listening tubes.

The projects are funded by the City as part of the Yankee Stadium Redevelopment Project and as part of a $200 million investment in Bronx parks, financed by mitigation funds from the construction of the Croton Water Filtration Plant through the New York City Department of Environmental Protection and the Municipal Water Finance Authority. As part of the mitigation, DEP has also funded job training and emphasized local hiring, resulting in a monthly basis of between 20 and 25 percent of labor onsite being done by Bronx residents.

Parks recently cut the ribbon on $14 million in Croton-funded renovations to four other Bronx Parks on August 14th: Story Playground, Soundview Park, Aqueduct Lands Playground and Devoe Park.

To date, Parks has completed 22 Croton projects, totaling more than $37 million and 21 more projects totaling more than $60 million are in construction. There are also 32 additional projects in design totaling more than $97 million.
