WORDS OF WASHINGTON IRVING BROUGHT TO LIFE BY GREAT NEW YORK WRITERS SERIES

On Tuesday, September 26, Parks presented another installment of Great New York Writers in Great New York Places, its successful series of celebrity readings in some of the City's most historic and interesting spots. The National Arts Club hosted the latest event, with guests reading selections from the work of classic American writer Washington Irving, author of Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle as well as many other stories and satirical essays.

Featured readers included Barry (Brad) Bostwick, the Tony-nominated actor who has in recent years played the intelligent but sometimes naive Mayor Randall Winston on ABC's hit comedy "Spin City." Actress Christine Ebersole, who has appeared in the films "Tootsie" and "Amadeus" and currently stars on Broadway in "The Best Man," also offered her rendition of an Irving piece. Marisa Berenson, an international star of film, television and stage who was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Bob Fosse's "Cabaret," closed out the trio. Commisioner Henry J. (Star Quest) Stern was present to kick off the evening, along with National Arts Club President James (Agent Oliver) Aldon Jr. and Library of American Publisher Max (Literary Lion) Rudin.

A MUSICAL GROUNDBREAKING AT MULLALY PARK

On Monday, September 25, StarQuest was joined by Council Member Wendell (Reverend) Foster, Community Board 4 Chair Ade L. Rasul, 44th Precinct Captain Thomas King, P.S. 114 Principal Linda Falcon, and Bronx Borough Commissioner William (Zorro) Castro for the groundbreaking of a $3.1 million reconstruction project at John Mullaly Park in the Bronx. The project will bring upgraded ball fields, an improved play area for tots and teens featuring a spray shower, as well as enhanced lawn and seating areas. A band of local schoolchildren provided musical accompaniment for the groundbreaking of the park, which is named after the former Secretary of the New Parks Commission.

MAYOR KOCH AWARDS CULTURAL PRIZES TO ACQUIRED TASTE CONTEST WINNERS

Sophia Husar, a homemaker from the Bronx, became "Culture Czar For A Year" yesterday morning. She'll spend the next 12 months going to black tie exhibition openings, plays, concerts, films, and lectures by famous authors. And she started her busy year in true VIP fashion yesterday by shaking hands with Mayor Koch in the Blue Room at City Hall.
