Queens Parks Commissioner Dorothy Lewandowski today joined Borough President Melinda Katz and Council Member Elizabeth Crowley to celebrate a $1 million renovation to the playground in Ridgewood’s Evergreen Park.

“Even on a cold day, the new garden-themed playground in Evergreen Park can make it feel like springtime,” said Commissioner Lewandowski. “We’re thrilled to have completed this great playground project, and look forward to the next phase of renovations.”

At the community's request, NYC Parks removed the underused bocce and shuffleboard courts, and replaced them with a reconstructed and expanded garden-themed playground, complete with new spray showers.

The innovative playground design provides toddlers and younger children a place to play and use their imagination, surrounded by greenery. New play equipment is painted green with a few blooms of bright colors. The spray shower features large green misting leaves, directional jets and bubblers, in a field of leaves and vines providing four seasons of play. The project was funded by Council Member Crowley. Construction on the new playground began in early April 2015, and the park officially opened to the public in Summer 2016.

A second phase of renovations to Evergreen Park is currently being designed. This next phase will focus on replacing the existing play areas located west of the comfort station with expanded playground equipment for older kids. A new seating area off of St. Felix Avenue while provide a place for all ages to sit and enjoy the park.

The design for Phase 2 was approved by the Community Board last month, and is scheduled to wrap up late summer 2017, with construction expected to begin the following summer.
The two phases combined represent a total of $3.4 million, with allocations from Council Member Crowley, Borough President Katz and Mayor de Blasio.
