Construction Begins On Garden-themed Playground In Ridgewood’s Evergreen Park

Two phase project represents $3.4 million capital investment

On Friday, April 24, NYC Parks Queens Commissioner Dorothy Lewandowski joined Council Member Elizabeth Crowley, District Manager of Community Board 5 Gary Giordano and Principal of PS 68Q Anne Marie Scalfaro to break ground on a $1 million reconstruction of Evergreen Park in Ridgewood, and announced an upcoming phase of improvements.

“NYC Parks and the Ridgewood community came together to design a new play space in Evergreen Park to keep kids active and captivate their imaginations,” said Queens Parks Commissioner Dorothy Lewandowski. “We look forward to inviting everyone back next spring to ‘play in the garden,’ and we are grateful to Council Member Crowley for her support of this innovative project.”

"When we improve our parks, we are making smart investments that enhance quality of life and public health of the entire community," said Council Member Elizabeth Crowley. "That is why I am so proud to have allocated over $1 million dollars for the renovation of Evergreen Park. These upgrades will not only benefit the community but also P.S. 68, whose students use the park as their playground. When completed, this park will be enjoyed for generations to come."

Construction at Ridgewood’s Evergreen Park began in early April 2015. At the community's request, NYC Parks will be replacing the underused bocce and shuffleboard courts with a reconstructed and expanded garden-themed playground, complete with new spray showers.

The innovative playground design will provide toddlers and younger children a place to play and use their imagination, surrounded by greenery. New play equipment will be green with a few blooms of bright colors. The spray shower features include large green misting leaves, directional jets and bubblers, in a field of leaves and vines providing four seasons of play. Construction is expected to take about a year to complete, and has been funded with $1 million allocated by Council Member Crowley.

With an additional $2.4 million funded by Council Member Crowley, Borough President Katz and the Mayor, NYC Parks is moving forward on a second phase of improvements to Evergreen Park, which will include a reconstruction of the asphalt field. We look forward to collaborating with the community on the design of this project.
