ENNIS PLAYGROUND REOPENS BOASTING $2.9 MILLION IN IMPROVEMENTS

NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver, FAICP, today joined City Council Member Brad Lander and local community members to officially cut the ribbon on a total reconstruction of Ennis Playground. The project was funded by a $1.85 million allocation from Council Member Lander, $650,000 from Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams and $484,000 from Mayor Bill de Blasio.

“The transformation of Ennis Playground is another step towards bringing world-class greenspaces to neighborhoods all over our city,” said Commissioner Silver. “This investment by Council Member Lander, Borough President Adams and Mayor de Blasio breathes new life into a playground that will serve parkgoers from all ages and backgrounds. It will be a valuable resource for generations to come.”

“Ennis Playground is a beloved park in the heart of Gowanus and I’m thrilled to have supported this renovation of play space and equipment for park-goers of all ages,” said Council Member Lander. “The new and improved Ennis Playground is an important part of wider efforts in Gowanus to improve green spaces for current neighbors and provide a foundation for future growth. Thanks to the NYC Parks for your partnership on this project, which will serve the neighborhood for years to come.”

“I say all the time that parks are the great equalizer, and children and families of Gowanus deserve a state-of-the-art green space. Three years after our community-led process to redesign Ennis Playground, we have a wonderful, environmentally-forward place for our neighborhood to share. I was proud to allocate $650,000 toward the reconstruction of the playground, and I thank Commissioner Silver and Council Member Lander for their steadfast partnership in moving this project forward,” said Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams.

With nearly $3 million in upgrades, the new and improved Ennis Playground now features basketball courts, spray showers, new playground equipment, and a multi-purpose synthetic turf field which can accommodate free play, toss sports, picnics and more. In addition to the updated active amenities, there are opportunities for passive recreation with new seating areas along the park’s path and seating by the basketball courts for spectating. The park’s entrances have been improved and the perimeter of the park has been softened with trees and new plantings.
