Staten Island was treated to a “double-header” of celebrations today as Parks cut ribbons on two new playgrounds. This morning, Commissioner Adrian Benepe joined Council Member Vincent Ignizio to cut the ribbon on a tot lot playground at Drumgoole Road West. Later this afternoon, Parks & Recreation Staten Island Commissioner Adena Long joined Deputy Borough President Ed Burke and City Council Member Debi Rose to celebrate the construction of another new playground in Silver Lake Park. The construction of both playgrounds was possible because of a generous allocation of $1 million from Borough President James Molinaro.

“Kids of all abilities now have two more innovative places to play at Drumgoole and Silver Lake Tot Lots, which feature accessible play equipment, swings, painted games, benches, a picnic table, fencing and new native plantings,” said Commissioner Benepe. “Thanks to $500,000 allocated by Borough President James Molinaro for each playground, Parks constructed two new accessible tot lots for the neighborhood’s children to enjoy.”

At Drumgoole Tot Lot, new accessible recreational equipment, swings, benches, and picnic table allow young park users to play and climb. The playground is located within a triangular Greenstreet, which is bordered by Drumgoole Road West, Rathbun Avenue and Carlton Boulevard. The playground is appropriately named in honor of Father John Drumgoole, an Irish priest who was a child-care pioneer and founder of St. Vincent’s Home for Homeless Newsboys at Mount Loretto. The goal of this project was to provide a playground for community children of all abilities between the ages of two and five.

Silver Lake’s new tot lot also includes accessible play equipment, swings, painted games, benches and a picnic table, providing access to an exciting and educational playground for community children, parents and care-givers. The playground is located in the 210-acre Silver Lake Park, which also features other recreational amenities including an 18-hole golf course, sports fields and trails. With continuous improvements and additions, this park has maintained its legacy as an attractive Staten Island destination.
