Empire State Building, One Vanderbilt’s Spire, The Arsenal, Washington Square Park Arch, Coney Island Parachute Jump Salute Park Workers Around the World with Green Lightings

NYC Parks today announced that for the second year, New York City will go green to celebrate essential park workers with iconic lightings. Joining World Urban Parks with green lightings around the world, the Empire State Building, and NYC Parks’ Arsenal, Washington Square Arch, Coney Island Parachute Jump--and this year--One Vanderbilt’s spire will honor our city’s parks workers. From New York City to cities across the world, park workers have continued to maintain public greenspaces in support of the mental and physical health of all visitors during the current COVID-19 pandemic.

“In a world disrupted by COVID, our parks serve as places of solace and sanctuary and thanks to park workers, these greenspaces remain open, clean, and safe for everyday use,” said NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver, FAICP. “This year, World Urban Parks is taking our Going Green for Parkies initiative to the global stage for a worldwide campaign in honor of parkies everywhere, and we are excited to partner with them to light iconic park elements like the Washington Square Park Arch, and the Empire State Building again so New York City shines green to show park workers here and around the world our appreciation for all they do.”

#GoingGreenForParkies is the ultimate campaign to express appreciation and gratitude for essential park workers. The #GoingGreenForParkies lightings in New York City begin at sunset (~7:50 p.m.):

  • The Empire State Building - on April 29
  • The Arsenal (Central Park) - through April 30
  • The Washington Square Park Arch - through April 30
  • The Parachute Jump (Coney Island Boardwalk) - through April 30
  • One Vanderbilt Spire - on April 30

In addition to the five lightings, NYC Parks is putting out a call to those who love greenspaces--the smallest to the largest--to wear green when visiting their favorite park this week, and to share a thank you on social media platforms using #GoingGreenForParkies. Parks will share the love by featuring shoutouts on its social media channels @NYCParks.
