Money is always a popular birthday gift and the Coney Island Boardwalk received a great deal of it on its 85th birthday - $10 million!

On June 13, Commissioner Adrian Benepe accepted a ceremonial check in the amount of $10 million from State Assembly Members Steven Cymbrowitz and Alec Brook-Krasny. The funds will be used for reconstruction projects along the Coney Island Boardwalk.

“The Coney Island Boardwalk is 85 years old and showing its age. What better birthday present for this cherished Brooklyn destination than the recent allocation of $10 million from the New York State legislature,” said Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe. “I am grateful to Assembly Member Cymbrowitz and Assembly Member Brook-Krasny for their foresight and their commitment in securing these essential funds. They will be put to good use in reconstructing sections of the boardwalk, providing visitors to Coney Island with a safe and enjoyable experience.”

That’s not all. Mayor Bloomberg earlier allocated approximately $5 million to reconstruct the boardwalk from West 12th Street to West 15th Street. That work will begin after Labor Day.

Now to find an ATM machine large enough to cash the check!
