City Line Park Transformed For Play

On August 12, Commissioner Adrian Benepe joined City Council Member Erik Martin Dilan, Community Board 5 District Manager Walter Campbell, and children from the Luis M. Marin Early Childhood Academy to cut the ribbon on over $1.6 million in improvements at City Line Park on Atlantic and Fountain Avenues in Brooklyn.

Thanks to an allocation of $1.5 million from Council Member Dilan and $127,000 from Mayor Bloomberg, Parks completely renovated City Line Park. The redesign of the park includes a new spray shower, tot swings and play equipment with a subway theme. The theme was selected because the park is located next to the East New York High School of Transit Technology. The handball and basketball courts were reconstructed. A new sitting area was created with benches and garden areas. New trees and shrubs also adorn the park.

These improvements were designed by Landscape Architect Stacia Tull. Work was done by J.R. Contracting under the supervision of Parks Resident Engineer Rohan Mendis.

At the ceremony, Council Member Dilan also announced that $2.5 million has been allocated to improve the grass ballfield at City Line Park.

This parcel of land was acquired by the City in 1886 as the site for the Ridgewood Pumping Station, which brought water to Brooklyn from the Ridgewood Reservoir in Queens. When the Croton Reservoir became the main source of New York City’s water in 1917, there was no longer a need to appropriate water from Queens. This land was then transferred to Parks between 1937 and 1949.
