Ground Is Broken For New Playground At City Line Park

On July 10, Commissioner Adrian Benepe was joined by City Council Member Erik Martin Dilan, District Manager of Community Board 5 Walter Campbell, and children from the Luis Marin Early Childhood Academy and the Brownsville Recreation Center to break ground on $1.5 million in renovations at City Line Park on Atlantic Avenue and Fountain Avenue in Brooklyn.

“The revitalization of City Line Park is another example of how we are expanding recreational opportunities and increasing greening in our local parks and playgrounds,” said Commissioner Benepe. “With $1.5 million in funding allocated by City Council Member Erik Martin Dilan, the playground will feature new play equipment with a subway theme, a spray shower, swings for tots, handball and basketball courts and new trees and landscaping. It will be a neighborhood oasis for children and adults alike.”

The redesign of the park was completely funded by Council Member Dilan in the amount of $1.5 million. It will include a new spray shower, tot swings, and play equipment with a subway theme. This is appropriate as the park is next door to the East New York High School of Transit Technology and adjacent to the "J" and "Z" subway lines at Norwood Avenue.

The handball and basketball courts will be reconstructed. A new sitting area will be created with 1939 World’s Fair-style benches, picnic tables, and perimeter and entrance gardens. New trees and shrubs will also adorn the park including ginkgoes, English oaks, compact inkberries, oakleaf hydrangeas, and compact winterberries.

These improvements were designed by Landscape Architect Stacia Tull. Work is being done by J.R. Contracting under the supervision of Parks Resident Engineer Rohan Mendis.

This parcel of land was acquired by the City in 1886 as the site for the Ridgewood Pumping Station, which brought water to Brooklyn from the Ridgewood Reservoir in Queens. When the Croton Reservoir became the main source of New York City’s water in 1917, there was no longer a need to appropriate water from Queens. This land was then transferred to Parks between 1937 and 1949.
