NYC PARKS CELEBRATES COMPLETION OF $1 MILLION PLAYGROUND IMPROVEMENT PROJECT IN ST. ALBANS PARK

NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver, FAICP, yesterday joined Queens Borough President Melinda Katz, Senator Leroy Comrie, and Council Member I. Daneek Miller to cut the ribbon on various improvements to the playground in St. Albans Park.

“I’m very proud to be back in Southeastern Queens to celebrate another community playground opening on budget and ahead of schedule,” said Commissioner Silver. “This new enhanced play space will complement the existing athletic courts and open recreation areas in St. Albans Park, and provide kids with a fun and colorful area to enjoy year-round.”

“The playground is treasured by the growing families around St. Albans Park, and the million dollar renovations will enhance even more space for play and recreation,” said Borough President Katz. “NYC Parks deserves to be commended for completing this upgrade on budget and ahead of schedule.”

"St. Albans Park is a vital resource for families in our community and I was always proud to support it and the Parks Department during my tenure as a City Council Member," said NYS Senator Leroy Comrie. "From family days, to jazz on the lawn, to health fairs and small concerts, the park has been a hub for sports, recreational, cultural, and informational events for many years. I want to thank and commend my colleagues in government, Mayor de Blasio, Borough President Katz, Council Member Miller and Commissioner Silver for this huge investment in our neighborhood park and the continuing expansion of health and wellness for Southeast Queens."

“These enhancements will ensure residents throughout the district will be able to use the park to exercise and play with their neighbors” said Councilman I. Daneek Miller. “I look forward to seeing families use the new furniture and games, and of course my office will continue to host our annual Skate Day at the park! I would like to thank Commissioner Mitchell Silver and his team at the Parks Department for completing this project.”

The scope of work included the reconstruction of play equipment, and safety surfacing, as well as the addition of new site furniture, lighting, drinking fountain, fences, pavements, and a garden area. The swings were relocated to allow more open space for play. Custom colorful painted games and game tables were also added to enhance opportunities for play in the park.

The project was funded with $400,000 each from the Borough President and City Council, and an additional $217,000 from the Mayor’s Office. Construction began in August 2016 and was completed in May 2017, for a total duration of less than one year.

St. Albans Park is divided by Merrick Boulevard: to the west is a grass baseball diamond and to the east is a large open grass area, several sitting areas, basketball courts, handball courts, tennis courts, and a playground.
