Parks & Recreation Cuts The Ribbon On New Ballfields For Corona

Parks & Recreation Commissioner Adrian Benepe today joined Council Member Hiram Monserrate, Borough Commissioner Dorothy Lewandowski, members of local softball leagues, and students from P.S. 143 to cut the ribbon on the $1.5 million renovation of Hinton Park’s ballfields.

"We are delighted to bring two new fields to the Corona community, just in time for this great summer weather," said Commissioner Benepe. "Thanks to the allocation by Council Member Monserrate and Mayor Bloomberg’s commitment to improving our ballfields citywide, neighborhoods across New York City have or will soon be enjoying new or upgraded ballfields for years to come."

The project, funded entirely through a $1.5 million allocation from Council Member Monserrate, brings two new synthetic-turf baseball fields, fencing, a dugout, bleachers, trees and landscaping to the Corona neighborhood.

Parks & Recreation’s Resident Engineer Edward Chan and Project Designer Rachel Kramer worked with their capital team and contractor Hirani Consulting to renovate the fields, one of which is marked for Little League games and the other for adult softball. The previous grass fields were replaced with synthetic turf, which not only utilizes fewer resources, such as water, pesticides and fertilizer, but also allows for safer, year-round play.

Hinton Park is located at 114^th Street and Pell Avenue in Corona and sits across the street from P.S. 134, the Louis Armstrong School. The Park’s sitting area was reconstructed in 1997, thanks to $628,000 from Borough President, then Council Member, Helen M. Marshall. Two years later, the City added a nearby 0.06-acre triangle to the Park, which gave it the 3.735 total acreage that it is today.
