Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe, Council Member John Liu, Community Board 7 Chair Eugene Kelty and children from the CityParks Tennis program today celebrated the opening of eight newly refurbished all-weather tennis courts.

“Just in time for the U.S. Open, the Flushing Fields tennis courts offer tennis lovers of all ages the opportunity to practice their forehands and backhands on these new all-weather courts,” said Commissioner Benepe. “Thanks to Council Member Liu’s generous allocation, the courts are durable enough for the most dedicated of tennis players – in rain or shine.”

Thanks to an allocation of $1 million by Council Member Liu, Flushing Fields now sports newly refurbished all-weather tennis courts with fencing, benches and plantings. Flushing Fields offers numerous sports activities, in addition to tennis, from baseball to basketball to handball. The park also features a comfort station and playground with a spray shower.

The City Parks Foundation run free tennis programs, presented by Chase, for New York City children. CityParks Tennis lessons for kids are offered at all skill levels. Opportunities include free beginner lessons, tournaments, leagues, excellence programs and special events. CityParks Tennis features free lessons for kids ages 5 to 16 in 36 parks throughout the five boroughs.
