Great Tree Search

Great neighborhoods have Great Trees!

Great Trees—those that stand out as unique symbols of our diverse urban forest—are an important part of NYC’s rich cultural history. Parks is accepting nominations from the public to designate Great Trees across the city to be honored and enjoyed by New Yorkers for years to come.

What makes a Great Tree?

In 1985, and again in 2024, New York City announced the results of a Great Tree Search through a public nomination process. We continue to seek stories of potential Great Trees. New Yorkers in every community are invited to nominate exceptional trees, as defined by their historic, botanical, and cultural significance, with the goal of increasing both the number of trees and the diversity of people telling these stories.

Explore our guidelines for nomination below, then make your nomination!

Cedar of Lebanon

Historic Significance

Trees bear witness to many important historical moments across our city. We are prioritizing nominations that reflect the diversity and lived experiences of New Yorkers. Trees may represent an important movement, protest, or historic change.

Botanical Significance

Some trees may be rarer, larger, or unique in other aesthetic or scientific ways. We will consider rare species or varieties, remnants of historic or native ecosystems, trees with profound form or structure, and the location of the tree in the immediate landscape.

Cultural Significance

Some trees may have a strong association with a belief, person, place, or event of cultural importance to a community. We welcome nominations that reflect cultural expressions, or stories from historically marginalized communities. Trees may be mentioned in a beloved book, song, or appear in visual art.

Nominate a Great Tree

As time passes, new trees grow to impressive sizes, and new events occur that are worthy of commemoration. Through a public process, New Yorkers in every community are invited to nominate exceptional trees. Nominations will be reviewed and considered by a selection committee based on their historical, botanical and cultural significance.

The trees designated as "Great Trees" are celebrated and their stories preserved. We will continue to advocate for specialized preservation and possible propagation of these trees.
