Star Track Cycling at Kissena Velodrome
Star Track is a free, youth outreach program created to teach New York City area kids the fundamentals of track cycling at Kissena Velodrome in Queens. Founded in 2004 in collaboration with NYC Parks, Star Track has helped thousands of children discover the joys and benefits of bicycle racing. The Star Track program also provides the opportunity to join a competitive cycling team with elite riders from across the country, and Star Track racers have earned more than 35 National Championship jerseys over the last three racing years. Star Track is funded entirely by sponsors and private contributions, and thanks to this generous support, the program is fee-free for New York City children.
Star Track Cycling Program
Star Track runs eight-week sessions for kids ages 8-16 in the spring, summer, and fall with instruction by USA Cycling licensed coaches. Classes are held on Monday-Thursday afternoons and Saturday mornings outdoors at the Kissena Velodrome in Kissena Park, Queens.
The Star Track Cycling program is completely free for kids, with track bikes and helmets provided for all riders. No racing or track bike experience is necessary, only the ability to ride an ordinary bicycle. Beginning racers typically start with a single weekly session with returning riders attending twice a week or more.
Registration
Registration is required. To learn how to enroll your child or find out more about the program, please email info@startrack.nyc.
Cycling in New York City
Bicycle racing has a long tradition in New York City. In fact, Madison Square Garden was built first for track cycling, and it is still remembered in the name of the “ Madison,” an Olympic event. The Kissena Velodrome was built for the 1964 US Olympic trials. Read more about the history of bicycling in New York City Parks.
USA Cycling Centers of Excellence
Star Track has been designated a USA Cycling Center of Excellence, which is awarded to select junior and Under-23 development teams which excel in the development of young cycling athletes.
