THE LINKS AND LOCKS OF
SCOTLAND AND NEW YORK

Parks is pleased to present The Links and Locks of Scotland and New York, an exhibition comparing the waterways of the two regions. Three contemporary artists, Douglas Lazarus, Benjamin Swett and Jerry Willis, utilize oil paintings and color photography to depict the beauty of waterway scenes. From the Gowanus Canal to the Caledonian Canal, the images reveal resounding similarities between the New York metropolitan area and the Scottish countryside.

The artistic works portray the results of recent waterfront revitalization efforts by both New York and Scotland. These bodies of water have historical ties as well. The canals of Scotland, built two centuries ago by economic speculators, and New York's natural framework of rivers were both once essential to commerce. Today, instead of shipping cargo, these major waterways have been reclaimed for recreational purposes. Boating, fishing and swimming are among the new activities enjoyed by river patrons.

The Links and Locks of Scotland and New York will be displayed in the Arsenal Gallery until October 25, 2001. The exhibition is sponsored by Parks and the Scottish-American Foundation. Admission is free.
