NYC PARKS CUTS THE RIBBON ON A REVAMPED FRANCIS LEWIS PARK PLAZA
New amenities and enhanced accessibility highlight upgrades to plaza with stunning views of the Whitestone Bridge.
On Friday, April 4th, 2025 NYC Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue joined Queens Borough President Donovan Richards, City Councilmember Vickie Paladino, Annemarie Vallone (widow of former City Councilmember Paul Vallone), Department of Veterans’ Services Chief of Staff Cassandra Alvarez, Friends of Francis Lewis Park Co-President Dorian Mecir, WWll Veteran Doug Grabiner, and community members to celebrate the reconstruction of Francis Lewis Park Plaza in Whitestone, Queens.
“Francis Lewis Park is a cherished green space with breathtaking waterfront views, and we’re thrilled to celebrate its revitalization. With new seating, upgraded pathways, and a restored memorial flagpole, this project enhances accessibility and creates a more welcoming space for the community to gather, relax, and enjoy the beauty of Queens’ shoreline,” said NYC Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue. “Thanks to the support of our local leaders, we’ve made lasting improvements that will benefit parkgoers for generations to come while preserving a space that honors our nation’s heroes.”
The reconstruction of Francis Lewis Park enhances both accessibility and visitor experience, focusing on the entry plaza at 3rd Avenue and the seating plaza surrounding the park’s memorial flagpole. These spaces were upgraded with new bluestone pavement, adding both durability and aesthetic appeal.
New amenities, including benches and game tables with chairs, create welcoming gathering spots for visitors of all ages. The memorial flagpole and its base were fully restored, featuring elegant granite cladding to preserve this important landmark while enhancing its visual prominence within the park.
Connecting these improved spaces, the asphalt pathway was completely reconstructed, ensuring a smooth and accessible walkway for pedestrians. Along its length, new benches were strategically placed, providing multiple areas for relaxation and appreciation of the park’s stunning waterfront setting. These enhancements offer visitors unparalleled views of the Whitestone Bridge and East River, making the park a more inviting and enjoyable destination for the community.
This $2 million project was funded by City Council.
