Qualifying Test Requirements

To qualify, you must:

  • Be at least 16 years of age by the start of employment.
  • Have at least 20/30 vision in one eye and 20/40 in the other - without corrective lenses.
Glasses and contact lenses may not be worn during the eye exam*.

For more information, please visit the Become an NYC Parks Lifeguard page.

Vision Requirements

Instead of an onsite vision exam, you may submit a letter from an eye doctor affirming that you meet the vision requirement. The letter must be dated within 30 days of taking the qualifying test. For more information and a sample letter to share with your eye doctor, visit our Lifeguard Vision Requirements page.

Lifeguard qualifying tests are held in all five boroughs December through March. Please check this page again soon for additional dates and locations.
