Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, Parks Commissioner Veronica M. White and other officials broke ground on the restoration of the High Bridge, the oldest remaining bridge in NYC. The bridge connects the Highbridge neighborhood in the Bronx to Washington Heights in Manhattan. When it first opened in 1848, the bridge was part of the Old Croton Aquaduct which carried fresh water to NYC from Westchester County. The High Bridge is expected to open in 2014 to pedestrians and bicyclists.
