In 1912, Japan gave the United States thousands of cherry trees to celebrate their friendship. Over 2,000 of these trees were planted in New York. On April 14, 2012 Park's photographer Daniel Avila captured a formal ceremony held in Sakura Park, named after the Japanese word for cherry blossom, to commemorate the relationship between the two countries.
