On Saturday, September 26, New Yorkers were given the chance to outwit one another during the 9th annual Chess-in-the-Parks tournament. Chess sets, trophies, medals, and other prizes were awarded following the last round, and International Master Yury Lapshun took on all comers in speed chess throughout the day. This six-round tournament is free and open to the public. The Chess-in-the-Parks Rapid Open is a partnership between the Parks Department and Chess-in-the-Schools, which works to teach kindergarten through 8th grade public school students the game of chess.
