After Hurricane Sandy devastated the 14 miles of Park’s beaches, Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Commissioner Veronica White announced the opening of the restored beaches for the 2013 season at Coney Island Beach. More than 500,000 person hours were put in to remove more than 40,000 cubic yards of debris – enough to fill 12 Olympic-sized pools – and to aid in the restoration of all 8 of Park’s beaches.
